Cancer Center
Riverside Medical Center, Newport News, VA
Riverside Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia, envisioned a benchmark outpatient facility for cancer treatment. They are committed to accompanying the patients’ and loved ones’ journey through cancer care. They are equally supportive of staff needs to sustain energy and commitment for the demanding task. This freestanding center for the care of cancer patients and their families allows Riverside Regional Medical Center to combine diagnosis, treatment and care into one location, making it more convenient for patients and staff.
Technical excellence and effective function were a given; additionally, the Medical Center was intensely committed to accompanying the patients’ and loved ones’ journey through cancer care. They wanted to convey to their patients a message of hope, affirmation of life, and engagement in the healing journey. They were equally supportive of staff needs to sustain energy and commitment for the demanding work at hand. Familiar building elements create a calming environment. Warm woods and stone, tile, glass, plants and grasses, water elements and fireplaces reinforce this concept.
The Medical Center charged the architecture to reflect the character of the region with its historic roots, and to respond to the Center’s location in the woods, near sea and sand. Design and construction challenges included unstable coastal soil, tight constraints of time (four months for design and documentation, less than twelve for construction) and budget. Meeting these requirements enabled the project to realize the ambitious goals set forth to the Client’s great satisfaction.
The Center includes:
- Radiation Oncology
- Cancer Services
- Infusion Area
- Medical Oncology Exam Clinic
